Sports: Canmore Trails
Here are some of the more popular trails used for hiking or cross-country skiing in the Canmore area. Special notes for skiiers are in italics.
There are a number of trails around the Bow River in and around Canmore:
- Chinaman's Creek
- From downtown up to Chinaman's /Canmore Creek
- Canmore Nordic Centre
- Over the Engine Bridge to the Minesite Reclamation area and the Canmore Nordic Centre.
This area has 75 kilometres of challenging Olympic-class trails, and they are very well-maintained. Night skiing is available. There are user-fees and no dogs are allowed. Competitions are held here several times throughout the winter season.
- Policeman's & Cougar Creek
- Along Policeman's Creek (to southeast) and up Cougar Creek (to northeast)
- Harvie Heights
- Along the treeline onto the other side of the Highway, Harvie Heights
- Mount Rundle to Banff
- Along the south bank of the Bow and along the base of Mount Rundle to Banff
There are a number of more remote or challenging trails:
- Spray Lakes
- From the Nordic Centre along the creek past Whiseman's Pond and Goat Pond to the Spray Lakes. The Spray Lakes Reservoir, only five km from Canmore, has 20 kilometres of trails in the intermediate to difficult range.
- Pigeon Creek to Kananaskis
- From Dead Man's Flats up Pigeon Creek (you can go up Mount Allan, or take an easier route to the Kananaskis Village).
- Lake Minnewanka
- From just inside the Park Gates, up Carrot Creek around to the far side of Lake Minnewanka.
- Grassi Lakes
- This area is just south of town, up the hill from the Nordic Centre, on the Spray Lakes Road. These lead into the Spray Lakes trails.
User-trackset, they are not usually busy, except when a competition is held.
