Location
This charming town is named for the lake, though the lake had a variety of names over the years. In 1807, David Thompson named it Kootnae Lake, then Lower Columbia Lake, which was rename in 1883 by BC's Indian Commissioner for its similarity to Lake Winder-mere in Cumberland England. The town lies on the lake's eastern shore and is now popular for windsurfing, fishing, hang gliding, swimming and golf.

Shopping
The town has minimal shopping amenities, with more shopping in nearby Invermere to the north, though the only significant shopping malls about an hour away in either Golden or Cranbrook.
Recreation
The town is on the eastern shore of scenic Lake Windermere, with all its aquatic recreation, as well as the Windermere Valley Golf course just across the Highway, and Panorama Mountain Village about 25 km to the northwest, and Fairmont Hot Springs & Ski Resort 17 kilometres to the south. As well, the larger community of Invermere is only 7 km to the north,
